A diverse community in a green setting

A new urban quarter by Stuttgarter Wohnungs-und Städtebaugesellschaft mbH (SWSG) is proof that affordable housing and exemplary architecture are not mutually exclusive. In Zuffenhausen-Rot, a high-density neighbourhood that conserves resources is being created that leaves sufficient scope for residents to meet and engage with each other.

Neighbours come here regularly to get fresh vegetables – sown and harvested by the residents of the Immanuel-Grözinger-Haus. This men’s shelter and community garden is run by Evangelische Gesellschaft (eva). The high-rise building built in 1967 is located on the western edge of a space in Stuttgart-Rot previously used for agriculture. Now it is to become part of a socially diverse urban quarter planned by Stuttgarter Wohnungs- und Städtebaugesellschaft with support from IBA’27 and in collaboration with eva. Alongside innovative, ecological forms of building, there is a special focus on consciously designing spaces where people can meet. Smaller buildings on Böckinger Straße will join with larger apartment blocks on the opposite side to create a pedestrianised community space with a network of paths, green spaces and squares echoing the structure of the nearby allotments. People from the quarter and the neighbourhood will have a chance to meet each other on the way to the crèche or in the community centre. The centrally located IBA’27 building will become an experimentation space for new forms of building and housing. Made using hybrid timber construction methods, the building will have flexible floor plan typologies that can be adapted to the needs of future residents.
