A complex idea simply executed

On a former factory site in Stuttgart-Möhringen, an interdisciplinary project team is creating a multi-storey office building made from prefabricated wooden modules, putting together almost 300 spatial elements to create a versatile, carbon-saving whole.

At what was once the manufacturing location for Stuttgart-based bathroom fittings manufacturer Hansa, between administrative buildings and the fire station, visitors will soon be able to look underneath a series of arcades made from wooden pillars into an open foyer with various spaces for sitting and working that have cosy, natural wooden surfaces. In the middle of the new, mixed-use site, experts from planning and practice are working closely together to develop a climate-friendly and circular-use office building. In two timber construction plants, they created made-to-measure cube-shaped modules made from locally sourced wood including façades under controlled, weather-independent conditions. These were loaded onto trucks and brought to their destination, where within just a few weeks they were stacked on top of each other around what will be two greened courtyards, with no dust or dirt. An integrated energy and ventilation concept will add to the building’s sustainability. Higher-tech areas for shared use such as conference rooms, the canteen and sports areas are focused on the ground floor. As a result, the upper floors with office spaces that can be divided flexibly do not need a lot of technology and are ventilated naturally, for example with ventilation flaps in the balustrades. An ice storage system and heat pump combined with a solar unit will consistently use renewable energy sources and round off the approach of a modular, ecological way of building in exemplary fashion.
